Citrus peel oils - which are recovered by cold pressing are fundamentally different from most other essential oils, which are steam distilled. Steam distillation limits the size of molecules traveling into the essential oil, whereas cold pressing does not. Because of this, larger, photosensitizing coumarine molecules are generally present in citrus oils. The potential for photosensitizing should be considered before using them topically.
